Moving WhatsApp media to Google Drive: the three ways compared

Three different systems can put your WhatsApp media into Google. They sound similar and are constantly confused with each other, but they solve different problems — and only one of them frees up space on your phone while keeping your chats intact.

1. WhatsApp's own chat backup

What it is: Settings → Chats → Chat backup. WhatsApp bundles your messages and media into one encrypted archive and stores it in Google Drive.

What it is for: moving to a new phone. That is the whole purpose.

What it does not do:

Important: since 2024, these backups count against your Google Drive storage quota. They used to be free.

2. Google Photos device folder backup

What it is: Google Photos → Library → Device folders → turn on "WhatsApp Images". Your WhatsApp photos then get backed up like camera photos.

What it is for: having your photos in your photo library.

What to know:

The consequence: after freeing up space this way, your media is gone from your WhatsApp chats. It exists only inside the Google Photos app. The conversation itself shows nothing.

3. Space Saver

What it is: an Android app that copies WhatsApp photos and videos to your own Google Drive, then replaces each original with a small thumbnail at the same file path.

What it is for: freeing up space without changing what your chats look like.

How it differs: because the thumbnail sits exactly where the original was, WhatsApp still finds a file and still shows your media. Tap it and the original returns from Drive in full quality. It works in both directions — that is the difference from Google Photos.

Can you use more than one?

Yes, and it is not a bad idea. WhatsApp's chat backup is the only thing that restores your conversations — Space Saver never touches those, by design. Using both means your messages survive a new phone and your media does not eat your storage.

Space Saver handles photos and videos only. Documents, voice notes and chat history stay entirely between you and WhatsApp.

Where your files actually live

With Space Saver, files go directly from your phone to your own Google Drive. There is no intermediate server and no database with your data — Space Saver has neither, and never sees your media.

It uses the drive.file permission: an app with this access can only reach files it created itself. It cannot read anything else in your Drive.

Space Saver

Free up 97% of your WhatsApp storage without deleting a single photo. Your photos and videos stay visible in your chats — tap any one to get the original back.
