Is Space Saver safe? A WhatsApp cleaner app that deletes nothing, and how to check it
Yes, and you can check it yourself. Most WhatsApp cleaners free up storage by deleting your photos and videos. Space Saver, an Android app, deletes nothing. It copies the original to your own Google Drive, checks that the copy arrived complete, and only then replaces the large file on your phone with a small version in the same place. WhatsApp keeps showing that small version in the chat. Tap it and the original comes back.
There are no ads, we run no servers, and the app never asks for "All files access".
A typical cleaner vs Space Saver
| Typical WhatsApp cleaner | Space Saver | |
|---|---|---|
| Frees up space | ✅ | ✅ |
| What happens to the photo | deleted | copied to your own Google Drive first |
| Still visible in the chat | ❌ | ✅ (small version) |
| Get the original back | ❌ | ✅ tap it |
How it works
- Copy the original to your own Google Drive.
- Confirm the copy is complete: Google Drive returns a fingerprint (checksum) of the file and Space Saver compares it with the original.
- Only then replace the large file on your phone with a small version at the same location, so WhatsApp keeps showing it.
If step 2 or 3 fails, the file is not marked as done and Space Saver tries again later. The original is never replaced without a confirmed copy.
What Space Saver does not do
| It does not | How to verify |
|---|---|
| Show ads | Google Play listing: no "Contains ads" label |
| Run servers or keep a database of your data | Google Play → Data safety; there is no account to create with us |
Ask for All files access (MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE) |
Google Play → App info → Permissions; full list on every permission and why |
| See the rest of your Drive | it uses drive.file, Google Drive's narrowest permission: it can only see files it created itself. Google's API enforces that, so you don't have to take our word for it |
| Touch your chats, documents or voice notes | photos and videos only |
Safeguards that protect your photos
- Confirmed copy before replacing (above).
- A marker inside every small version, so the app recognises its own small versions and never uploads one as if it were an original, even after a reinstall.
- A check on restore: after bringing the original back, the app verifies it really got the original.
- New media stays full size for a while before it moves. You choose how long.
- New phone or reinstall: with the same Google account, Space Saver finds your files in your Drive again by their content, not their name.
- You decide when it runs: Wi-Fi only or also mobile data, and only while charging if you like.
What leaves your phone
To find and fix bugs, Space Saver uses Firebase Crashlytics, Google's standard crash-reporting tool: crash reports under an anonymous identifier, with no file names, no photos and no Drive data. It is declared in Google Play's Data safety section. Details in the privacy policy.
The limits
- You need an internet connection to get an original back.
- Your photos and videos take the same space in your Google Drive as they did on your phone. A free account has 15 GB.
- If you delete the files from your Drive yourself, Space Saver can no longer restore them.
Tested on real phones
Tested on Android 10, 12 and 15 (Samsung Galaxy S9, Google Pixel 3a XL and Samsung Galaxy A14). Published on Google Play with its Data safety declaration and permission list visible to anyone. How the app works is documented publicly on GitHub.
