I deleted WhatsApp files but the storage didn't free up

You deleted photos, you emptied the gallery, and your phone still says storage is full. You didn't do anything wrong: WhatsApp keeps copies in more than one place, and deleting in one doesn't touch the others.

Here are the four causes, most common first.

1. The .Shared folder, which the gallery never shows

Every time you send a file, WhatsApp keeps a second copy in a hidden folder called .Shared. Your gallery doesn't show it, because the dot in front of the name marks it hidden on Android.

It can reach several gigabytes without you ever seeing it.

Where to look: a file manager → Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/.Shared. Turn on "show hidden files".

2. The gallery trash

Samsung, Xiaomi and Google Photos move deleted items to a trash that empties itself after 30 days. Until then it takes up exactly the same space.

Where to look: Gallery → Trash. Empty it manually.

3. The databases, not the files

The Databases folder keeps a copy of your message history for each day. Each file can be hundreds of megabytes, and they pile up. Deleting photos doesn't touch them.

Where to look: Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databases. Files with a date in the name are old copies; the most recent one is in use.

4. You deleted from the gallery, not from WhatsApp

This is the important one, and it's the trap almost everyone falls into.

If you delete a photo from your gallery, WhatsApp never finds out. The chat still points at a file that no longer exists, so you see a broken or blurred square. And if the file was also in .Shared, the space wasn't fully freed anyway.

If you delete from inside WhatsApp, space does get freed — but the photo is gone from the conversation for good. WhatsApp doesn't keep a copy for you.

That's exactly the problem with no good answer

The only two routes Android gives you are both bad:

• Actually delete → you get the space, you lose the memory.
• Don't delete → you keep the memory, you still have no space.

Space Saver does the third thing. It copies the file to your own Google Drive, confirms the copy arrived intact, and only then replaces the original with a thumbnail at the exact same path. WhatsApp still finds a file there, so the photo stays visible in the chat. Tap it and the original comes back in full quality.

The space really is freed — a thumbnail is around 15-20 KB against several megabytes for the original.

Check these first

1. Empty the gallery trash
2. Look in .Shared with hidden files turned on
3. Delete old database files (the dated ones, not the newest)
4. Restart — Android sometimes lags behind on recalculating storage

If the number still won't move after that, what's taking up the space is the Media folder, and those are your actual photos and videos.
